Approval of the School Council Minutes for September
23, 2008
The Minutes were approved as circulated. The motion was made by Laura, seconded by
Shelley and carried unanimously.
Old Business
Lice:
John explained that if there is a call from a parent regarding head lice
on a child, all students are checked in the class and all children in that
family as well. A letter is sent home to
all parents in the class. Students cannot
come back until their heads are checked.
The school population has not been checked as a whole for several
years. If there was a large outbreak,
then the whole school would be checked.
Small outbreaks usually occur in September and after the Christmas
holidays. Public Health is no longer involved with lice check at the school
level.
Financial Report (Report given
to Council)
Sheila reported the bank
balance as of October 15th is $38 254.42. Our total committed
funds are $14 329.42. Our uncommitted funds are $6 053.65 (this
amount is available to spend).
Committee Reports
Fundraising
Vicki reported that the
magazine fundraiser has raised approximately $10,000.00. Volunteers have come forward to run the
spring fundraiser but details are to be finalized. Laura asked Vicki to speak to the Fundraising
Committee about sending fundraising information directly to the website.
Kids Care
Gayle reported that the
Halloween loot bags are being organized and will be delivered to Southlake
Hospital, Doane Hospice, Sandgate Women’s Shelter, Yellow Brick House, Blue
Door Shelter and possibly Markham Hospital and Richmond Hill Hospital. A few new classes are helping to decorate and
fill the bags. Eight classes are helping
from Grades 1 to 8.
Environmental
The front and back gardens
have been cleaned up, weeded and are ready for winter by the committee. The back garden is in need of soil and mulch.
Hospitality
Shelley requested funds for
two events including the dinner for teachers during interview night (November
27) and the teacher appreciation luncheon at the end of the year. Sue
made a motion to approve spending $1400.00 for the teacher dinner and
lunch. The motion was seconded by Laura
and approved unanimously.
Principal’s Report
Dress Code Review:
(Current Dress Code given to Council) John asked Council members to send
comments regarding the dress code to him via e-mail. This will be discussed at our next meeting.*
School Plan for Continuous
Improvement: (School
Plan given to Council) John asked Council members to read through the plan and
send opinions to him via e-mail. At the
next meeting John will give out a teacher draft copy of the plan for Council
approval.*
Create Administrative
Profile: (Leadership Profile given to Council) John
explained that the Board regularly asks the opinions of School Council members
regarding the necessary characteristics of a school administrator. Six areas are included: interpersonal leadership, operational
leadership, instructional leadership, strategic leadership, community
leadership and professionalism. Council members were given eight stickers and
asked to place them next to the statements of specific qualities that they felt
are necessary in a school administrator.
John will compile the information gathered at the meeting and send it to
the Board. The Board may use the information when looking at the movement and
placement of administration.
Teacher “Wish List”: John may be e-mailing the teacher “Wish
List” (for purchases) to Council members but it will be ready for the next
meeting for Council to discuss.*
